Ron Carter, Donostiako Jazzaldia Award 2010

June 28, 2010

As from 1994 the San Sebastian Jazz Festival has been giving an award to an outstanding musician or well known person for his contribution to jazz.  The list of awardees will be enriched this year with the name of Ron Carter to be added up to Doc Cheatham (1994), Phil Woods (1995), Hank Jones (1996), Steve Lacy (1997), Chick Corea (1998), Max Roach and Clark Terry (1999), Kenny Barron (2000), Ray Brown (2001), Elvin Jones (2002), Bebo Valdés (2003), Shirley Horn and the director Fernando Trueba (2004), Keith Jarrett and Charles Mingus (In Memoriam) (2005), Herbie Hancock (2006), Wayne Shorter (2007) and Ahmad Jamal (2008) and Roy Haynes (2009).

Ron Carter is an eminent bass player, who has released its role as a mere component of the rhythm section to provide it with a unique voice.

His work in the 60s with the fabulous quintet of Miles Davis, who showed the way to all  jazz players marked his biography;  many other leaders have wanted him near them up to the point that has made him appear in over 2,500 albums, as well as having starred in memorable duets with Jim Hall (guitar), Joe Henderson (sax) and Richard Galliano (accordion).

In 1990, members of that quintet (Carter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter, with Wallace Rooney on trumpet) played together under the Tribute to Miles Davis name and won a Grammy award, Carter won a Grammy again for a song he composed for the film ‘Round Midnight.
Carter remains one of the most original and influential bassists and is a reference for future generations thanks to his popular bass manuals.
